Transport Phenomena (TP)

U.S. National Science Foundation

Description

The Transport Phenomena (TP) program supports fundamental research to understand, model, and control the transport of mass, momentum, energy, and species across multiple scales. Innovative TP research supports advances in artificial intelligence; manufacturing; biotechnology; microelectronics; energy generation, extraction, and utilization; nuclear energy; quantum science and engineering; and other national priorities. TP projects involve experiments, theory, and/or computational modeling. They aim to improve understanding and to create novel analytical techniques. While projects focus on fundamental principles, they also have a clear vision of how research outcomes will benefit applications in engineering. TP supports research on the dynamics of single- and multiphase systems. Special interests include flow separation, transition to turbulence, drag reduction, cavitation, instabilities, and reactive flows. The program encourages research on the connection between dynamics at the microscale and material and flow properties at the macroscale. Fluids of interest include liquids, gases, suspensions, emulsions, granular materials, active fluids, biological fluids, colloids, aerosols, bubbles and drops, and fluids with surfactants. TP supports research on physicochemical phenomena at the interfaces between fluids and between fluids and solids. These phenomena include adsorption and desorption of nanoparticles and surfactants; bulk and interfacial rheology; wetting and capillarity phenomena; electrokinetics; flow in porous media; and directed and self-assembly of particles. TP supports research on thermodynamics and thermal transport involving conduction, diffusion, convection, phase transition, and radiation. Research may be across scales, in complex structures and at interfaces, in microelectronic devices, and in biological systems. Projects involving phonon transport and quantum thermal phenomena are welcome. TP encourages proposals focused on combustion of gas, liquid and solid fuels. Combustion topics of interest include chemical kinetic modeling, turbulence-chemistry interactions, detonations, plasma assisted reacting flows, sustainable fuels, mechanisms for pollutant control, and in-situ diagnostic methods. The program also supports research on wildland fire behavior that aims to prevent wildfire spread, inhibit its growth, and/or predict and mitigate fires at the wildland-urban interface. Partnerships: To speed discovery and innovation, NSF partners with federal agencies, industry, international groups, and others. Current opportunities are at NSF ENG Partnerships.

Occupational Safety and Health Research (R01)

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention - ERA

Award
Up to $680,000
Deadline
Feb 5, 2027

The purpose of the R01 grant program is to (1) improve understanding of the risks and conditions associated with occupational diseases and injuries, (2) identify and evaluate methods to reduce risks and prevent or minimize exposure to hazardous workplace conditions, and (3) translate scientific findings into practical prevention strategies, interventions, and products that reduce work-related illnesses and injuries. The Research Project Grant (R01) supports a discrete, specified research project in scientific areas that reflect the investigator's expertise and interests and that align with the mission of NIOSH. Applicants must concisely describe the occupational health problem their proposal addresses and explain how the proposed research activities will lead to outputs that help address this problem. Applicants should clearly describe the expected impacts of the proposed research, both during the project period and beyond.

Fiscal Year (FY) 2027 Department of War Multidisciplinary Research Program of the University Research Initiative (MURI)

Office of Naval Research

Award
Up to $7,500,000
Deadline
Apr 9, 2027

Established in 1985, the Department of War Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI) program funds U.S. academic research teams to conduct high-impact basic research that addresses future challenges faced by the Department of War. The MURI program specifically supports U.S. university teams investigating complex, DoW-relevant problem sets at the intersection of multiple scientific disciplines. MURI teams bring together world-class faculty, postdoctoral researchers, and graduate students - helping to develop a technically advanced, defense-aware scientific workforce and strengthen the U.S. defense industrial base.

California National Archery in the Schools Program 2026 (CalNASP) Equipment Grant

Department of Fish and Wildlife

Award
Varies
Deadline
Rolling

CalNASP is an affiliate of the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP™) - a non-profit, international style archery program dedicated to providing students in grades 4-12 the opportunity to learn and participate in target archery. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) oversees the CalNASP program and trains teachers to use NASP certified equipment and lesson plans. The CalNASP grant is awarded to 12-20 new schools each fiscal year. (July 1-June 30). The grant pays for a starter archery equipment kit so new schools can start the program in their PE classes. The kit includes: Twelve Genesis compound bows, five bulls-eye targets, one arrow-resistant net, one or two bow racks, five dozen arrows and an equipment maintenance kit. To be awarded the grant, schools cannot already be affiliated with NASP. They must fill out the grant application and submit a Grant Criterion. A Grant Criterion is a letter from the school's proposed Archery Instructor detailing how NASP will be integrated into their curriculum and the potential impact it will have on students. Grant applications and Criterion must be submitted by 7/30 each year. Grant awardees will be announced by 9/15, with equipment being purchased and distributed by 12/15. After grant awardees are announced, awarding schools must have all proposed NASP instructors complete NASP national training (provided for free up and down California). Once a school has a trained instructor and their equipment kit, the school can start teaching NASP curriculum.
